Remember when you were 15? Can you recall some of the dreams you had then? How many have you accomplished?

My reflection on that is what attracted me so strongly to the story of John Goddard, of whom the LA Times called, "The real life Indiana Jones," and one of his expeditions, "the most amazing adventure of this generation."

When he was 15, Goddard was inspired to create a list of 127 “life goals” (he called it “My Life List”). By his last count, the young seventy-something has accomplished 111 of these PLUS 400 others he set along the way!!

Here’s just a few of the ones he’s reached:

He’s climbed many of the world’s major peaks including the Matterhorn, Ararat, Kilimanjaro, Fiji, Rainier and the Grand Tetons.

He followed Marco Polo’s route through all of the Middle East, Asia and China.

He’s run a mile in five minutes, broad jumped 15 feet, high jumped five feet and performed 200 sit-ups and 20 pull-ups.

He was the first person to explore the 4200-mile length of the world's longest river, the Nile. (It was the number one goal of the 15-year-old Goddard and the one the Times called “the most amazing adventure of this generation.”). He has also been down the Amazon, Congo and others.

John has been to 122 countries, lived with 260 different tribal groups, explored the underwater reefs of Florida, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Red Sea, and more.

He has flown 40 different types of aircraft and still holds civilian air records; has read the Bible cover to cover and learned to speak French, Spanish and Arabic.

The last two on his original list included marrying and having children (he has six) and living to see the 21st Century, which he has done in style.

And I’m just getting started. But I think you get the point.

More than just one of the greatest adventurers the world has ever known, Goddard is an incredibly wise person, as this quote of his demonstrates: "If you really know what you want out of life, it's amazing how opportunities will come to enable you to carry them out."

How did John Goddard manage to live such an incredible life of achievement? Two simple, easily duplicatable “secrets:” He chose BIG dreams and he WROTE THEM DOWN.

There’s no power at all in small dreams. When the dream isn’t big enough, it’s too easy to give in to the obstacles that appear in our life. It’s very difficult to maintain the persistence that all great achievement requires when the dream is small or ordinary.

Harland Sanders was 65-years-old, with little more than a $105 Social Security payment in his pocket, when he started Kentucky Fried Chicken. He is said to have been rejected by over 1,000 banks before he became successful. If he hadn’t had a big dream his self-esteem could never have withstood such rejection.

One of the biggest dreamers in the world is Mark Victor Hansen. Working with his partner, Jack Canfield, their idea was rejected by 140 book publishers as “unsellable.” Today, their Chicken Soup series includes more than 70 titles that have sold more than 90 million copies in 39 languages. Mark says, “The more goals you set - the more goals you get. Think big, act big and set out to accomplish big results. ”

Not only must your dreaming and goal setting be big, but it must be in writing. Brian Tracy says that this act alone increases your odds of success by 1000%! Like many people, I’d heard that I should write my goals down, but like most people, I rarely did. Looking at Brian’s formula another way, the failure to write your goals and dreams down means that you’ve got less than a 1-in-10 chance of succeeding. Can it be any wonder then that most people don’t live their dreams?

Who knows where your life can go after it is driven by life goals. You may find yourself landing on the moon someday, which happens to be one of the few original dreams that John Goddard hasn’t realized.

Whatever you dreams may be, when you're doing your goal setting, make them BIG and WRITE THEM DOWN! Don’t be like the chap in this poem that Napoleon Hill included in the original edition of Think and Grow Rich:

"I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

The hat industry is buzzing, giddy in fact: "It's coming. It's coming." No, it's not the Russians or the Martians. It's the new Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

These Indiana Jones movies - the first one was released in 1981 - have meant more to the hat business in the last half-century than any other event on the planet. The only thing that comes close is the relatively new realization that hats serve an enormous benefit in protecting people from the harmful effects of the sun. Imagine, the direct relevance of hats to one's health has had less impact on the hat industry than a series of movies!

Indy's hat is a modern-day icon. Its current influence on the hat buying public is nothing short of phenomenal. The current popularity of fedoras can be traced to the first Indiana Jones movie when Indy, played by Harrison Ford, wears a safari style fedora, where the medium-to-large brim is turned down in the front and the back. The hat has become emblematic of the man. After that, all fedora styles took off. It seems that America must feel as if she has lost her way in 2008 At least you would think so if you looked at what our artists are presenting to us. They have come back to help us, indeed to lead us and get us thinking about what we can do and be if we can recover our can do spirit.

First, Rocky came back from the dead, from poverty, from old age to remind us of what really matters in life. We didn't bother engaging each other about the implausibility of a fifty year old getting in the ring with a twenty something. We didn't want to. We wanted to believe in Rocky because he (even though is just a fictional character) represents more to us. He is inspiration; he is our comeback kid. He is hard work, determination and most of all humility. When we go to see him in the movie, we are not interested in reality; and I dare say we are not all that interested in being entertained. Additionally, it is probably true that we are not all that interested in 'feeling good'. We want to be inspired. We need to be inspired.

It stands to reason that not too long after that Rambo came back to let us know that the world belongs to the American with the tough exterior but heart of gold: velvet and steel. We dismiss the rampant violence in the movie; because again, we want inspiration. We are able to leave the news about mortgage crises, jobs going overseas and rising racial tension. We are able to see a good guy win. Even if he is misunderstood, as all of us think we are at some level. Rambo is everyman. He is, unlike us at many points, clear on his mission. He walks with the certainty that we need to walk during difficult times.

Finally, have you noticed that Indiana Jones is coming back too? He rescued us from the wrath of God, from evil men who threatened the divine balance and even from poverty in India.

He reminds of the lines between good and evil. We never really leave his side and we are with him in spirit in his adventures and we want him to win. We expect him to win. He has come back just in time. Heck, if we can't have Jack Bauer for a whole calendar year; who to save us but Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones is back, and he is welcome.

Ever dreamed of being like a real life Indiana Jones, the character from the popular movie series who travels the world going from adventure to adventure? I know I have. But the question arises: how in the world could you make a living doing this? I mean would a museum really pay you enough to live off of. I really don't know.

The one thing I do know is that we all want the freedom to come and go as we please and still earn enough money to have a reasonably comfortable life. How in the world could that be possible? Well let's break it down. As a single person you probably would need to make about $2,000 per month to cover you basic expenses in most parts of the world. If you are married and your spouse works probably just double the figure for the both of you. If you have kids probably add an additional $1,000 per kid. So if you have a spouse and two kids we're talking about $6,000 per month after taxes. That's a lot of money. How can I travel the world, live out my adventure fantasy and earn that kind of money?

Well, Internet Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, Network Marketing, Infopreneurship or some combination of them is about the only way you can actually move around the globe and still earn that kind of money. With internet cafes existing even in some parts of the world not known for their infrastructure and wealth it is possible. I am not talking about internet scams here either.

It's okay.

Really. You're not alone. There are thousands more people like you. And me.

You want Indiana Jones' hat.

You don't have any reason except...well, you want one. If you lived 75 years ago, it wouldn't even be a question: of course you'd own a hat. And you'd feel naked if you left the house without it.

After all, just look at it! The sharp brim. The distinctive shape. The flavor of class and dignity that comes with that 1930s style.

Ah, the fedora!

But, in an age of superstores, low prices and lower quality, where does one acquire such a thing of beauty?

For me, the answer was obvious: why not contact the man who made Harrison Ford's hat? Marc Kitter, along with his partner Steve Delk, hand-made all the fedoras used in the latest Indiana Jones film, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

Bernie Pollack, costume designer for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" contacted Kitter. "He'd been told that that Steve and I had specialized ourselves on the Indy fedora and wanted to know if we could answer some questions. After quizzing us on brim widths, crown heights, ribbon width, fur quality and many other details, Pollack asked us for some samples. We sent in several sample hats and could do nothing but wait."

According to Pollack, Spielberg had been worried. "Ah, I'm so relieved he [Spielberg] said. I lost sleep wondering if you would be able to come up with the perfect hat."

Kitter said, "But, after a test shooting with Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, the dream came true and we got the order. My wife went on vacation and Steve and I started making hats up to 18 hours a day."

Eighteen hours a day? If that sounds like a lot, it helps to know what goes into making a real Indiana Jones fedora. The best fedoras are made from fur-felt, never wool. In fact, the highest quality fedora is made from beaver.

It's a long and tedious process. The fur is manipulated, treated and transformed into actual "felt", arguably the toughest fabric known to man. (The fibers are interlocked and arranged in every possible direction making it almost impossible to tear.)

"The pure beaver felt used on my hats are specially made to my specs from a traditional manufacturer. The density of the felt is the highest I've ever worked with it adds to the durability of the final hat. We even add water-repellant to the felt during the manufacturing process."

From there, the best fedoras are hand-crafted over a wooden block. "Wooden hat blocks have the advantage of letting the felt "breath" while it dries on them. This is one of the many details that isn't always visible but prove valuable in the long haul."

Ironically, one of the most important pieces of a high-quality fedora might be something that you rarely see: the sweatband. Since this is the only part of the hat that actually touches the wearer's head, having the right material ensures comfort and durability.

Kitter's hats use exclusive sweatbands made from kangeroo hide; the hides are traditionally tanned by a family-owned company in Australia. From there, they're cut and turned into the most shrink resistant leather sweatbands available, known and loved by customers all over the world.

The finishing touch is the lining of the hat made from the highest quality bridal satin. "It looks and feels like silk but it's more resistant to dust and sweat."

The whole process can take more than 14 hours by hand and it shows.

So...what makes the Indiana Jones hat so unique?

"The Indy Fedora is a classic brown snap brim Fedora with a contrasting dark brown ribbon, but the -- as is always the case with quality -- the devil is in the details," said Kitter.

"The blockshape used for the Indy Fedora is very uncommon nowadays. Today most classic hats have a tapered crown and are made from lightweight felt, mainly pure rabbit or rabbit beaver blends.

But, even if you never have to worry about wearing your fedora through the jungles of South America or racing the Russians for an ancient artifact, you still deserve a hat that will survive normal living.

"A high-quality fedora should be able to protect you from the elements, not the other way around. The hat should withstand heavy downpours, hot and humid summer days, snow....but it should do it with style. So, you'll be able to wear the same hat to the restaurant at night," Kitter says.

In other words, an authentic Indy fedora will get you positive feedback on a luxury cruise due to its velvet-like silky surface...but it's just as appropriate with jeans and work-boots.

So, whether you're looking for that final touch of class to go with a great suit and tie or you're excavating the garden to make room for the begonias, the classic Indiana Jones fedora is the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
